Bear Necessities of LifeMusings of Teddy Bear Necessity's Household
to Whom It May Concern Spring in Kyoto

"My very first trip to this famous ancient city of Japan"
reported by Teddy Bear Necessity I have heard a lot about Kyoto before, but this was the first time I went to this famous classic city of Japan. It was the capitol city from 794AD to 1868 until the emperor's residence moved to Tokyo, and so this city has a rich historical and cultural significance. It was still a little too early for the cherry blossoms season, but walking around in a city like this was such a treat. The mini Schnauzer next to me is my .. hmm, he is my grandma's dog, so that makes him my uncle? He is like 5 years younger, though, so I do not feel I have to respectable to him. We toured the city during the day; since the city of Kyoto is organized on a grid, it's very easy to walk and find your way. I like walking around in Kyoto than in Tokyo, that's for sure. Tokyo streets are too congested and confusing. Kyoto was pretty interesting. I can definitely go back there again any time. Strange Encounter

"Strange people are everywhere"
reported by Teddy Bear Necessity I know I was looking particularly teddy bear like when we had this strange encounter a few weeks ago. When my mom and I were sitting on a bench in front of a giant spider statue at the Roppongi Hills, a guy who was 20 something approached us. He sorta .. kinda .. stumbled towards as if he was in total shock (or he was drunk) and stopped short of being able to touch me. As we looked up at the man, he was staring at me and simply muttered "...ka..ka..kawaii...." or if translated "cu..cu..cuuute..." or some such. My mom said "thank you" and I said nothing. (Like I don't know I'm cute?) He was just standing there and kept on muttering the same word over and over while staring at me like he was looking at something that he just couldn't believe actually exist. (What am I, an alien?) The whole thing was rather bizarre even if he was giving me a compliment. I felt uncomfortable to be stared down like that because it's such a dominant gesture in the dog language, so I looked at my mom for guidance. She simply gave me a silent but firm warning to stay calm and behave myself, so I ignored the man completely and looked away. I'm not allowed to misbehave like bark or charge at strangers, you see. My mom's stance is that it's up to me, the civilized Airedale, to show good manners in all situations because we cannot control strangers' behaviors anyway. I don't know if I agree, but mommy is always right so it must be right. Sometimes I slip because I'm a go-for-it kind of an Airedale, but for the most part I make my mom very proud, I swear. When the man said "cute" for the 30th time and finally walked away, without asking any more about me or touching me, I might add, my mom and I looked at each other and shrugged our shoulders. Do you think he just couldn't believe there is a breed of such a perfection in the world of dogs? I bet that was it. A Dog Run

"A visit to one of the dog runs"
reported by Teddy Bear Necessity This park has several recreational facilities and one of them is a dog run. When I visited the place, there weren't too many users, but I hear that it can be a happening place on weekends. It's certainly spacious enough for any dog to have fun ... if only the dog is young and restless. In other words, if not like me at all. At this point in my life, I have no desire to make new friends, and being in confined space just makes me yawn. My mother calls me old and boring, but I'd say I'm mature and philosophical. There's a big difference. Snow Day

reported by Teddy Bear Necessity
It almost never snows in Tokyo and when it does it's often slushy because it's a mixture of rain and snow. The winter temperature here rarely goes below 0C (32F), so whatever accumulation melts pretty much right away, too. Here I am standing in the season's probably last (and only 2nd) snow rain in the Prince Arisugawa Memorial Park. |
