Bear Necessities of LifeMusings of Teddy Bear Necessity's Household
to Whom It May Concern Encounter of an Airedale Kind
2007.02.18 (Sun)
One fine weekend afternoon by the sea, we were watching Louie play with our landlord's Shiba, Sakura, as usual. There suddenly bursting in was a young Airedale! An Airedale of all breeds!! It was like she was just dropped from the sky right in front of us. So uncanny. As it turns out, she is our neighbor's new puppy named "Lady" who we had only heard about before. We had no idea it was an Airedale! Miss Lady is 5 months old and she has a 5-year-old big sister (2-legged). Two of them seem to be great pals. Louie and Lady instantly hit it off, too. Although Louie is really no match for a rough and tumbling Airedale puppy, they became good playmates. It's always funner when you have friends to play with! 100% huggable

I've mentioned before that Louie likes to be cuddled with. This was a characteristic that Teddy never possessed. We've begged and begged for her to stay with us on the sofa or on the bed, but she was as aloof as a starlet to a fan. So imagine our pleasure to have a dog who actually wants to squeeze himself in the tightest space just to be close to us. As you can see, Russell cannot get enough of that. Every time I look, Louie and Russell are cuddled together. "Louie, do you remember you didn't know how to get up on the couch when you came to us?" "Such a long time ago, mommy. I know better now." We used to give Teddy empty yogurt containers for good licks.
Alas, the big Airedale muzzle wouldn't fit in it and she could never reach the bottom to make it spic and span. In the case of Louie the little boy, on the other hand, his muzzle is just the right size to give it real good licks. Muzzled by the yogurt container. What a menace to society! Pushy Kitties

Zoey's daily routine is to move around in the house looking for the sun.
"Huh? The sun is moving already? I just moved over here." "Hey you, the big one there! That's right, you! Could you phhhleeeeeease not block my sun?" "Oh, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to be in your way." "Now you know, don't you? Now, go away." "Oh, OK.. ." When Louie tried to look for refuge in his crate, he found the other cat staking out. (To be fair, though, this crate **was** initially Tobey's for the cross-Atlantic transport.) Poor harmless Louie is totally being pushed around by the kitties! Dog-gone Cats

Some people know this, but we got Tobey the cat first as Teddy's companion. They got along handsomely, and Tobey became a dog-gone cat just like the way life intended for him considering the fact that he was actually born into an Airedale household to begin with.
So in a way, we got Louie not just for ourselves but also for Tobey, too. And just as we expected, they get along very well. Tobey doesn't seem to mind too much even when Louie chases him in the occasional terrier-gone-wild mode. The same thing cannot be said about Zoey (who also came to this household as Tobey's companion, come to think about it), actually, since she is not a natural dog lover. But even she doesn't seem to mind Louie at all as you can see. It's nice to have the dog-and-cat-household back in order again. Hand Me Downs

A decade is a long enough time to accumulate things, and Teddy's life was no exception. The material girl possessed many earthly items that she did not take along to the doggy heaven and we held on to these items because we figured they'd eventually go to her successor. The only misculculation on our part was that this successor turned out to be much smaller than an Airedale.
So this life jacket, for example, is simply way too big for Louie. He can drown in this! Even the smallest of Teddy's jacket (this one, in particular, looked like a bolero on her) is too big for this little guy. The same goes to most of Teddy's collars. (Although she did take along her most meaningful collars, there still are many left.) Of course Louie deserves his own things, too, and these are his first collars of his own, to be followed by many more to be certain. Louie Movie

This is what Louie is like.
Kerry Poo Retriever? But he does his terrier shake well, too. Louie is always like this whenever our eyes meet. He is such a sweetie! New Addition
2007.02.01 (Thu)
It's been awhile since I last updated this blog. Many things have happened since then, but the biggest of all was the fact that we started a life with another dog again.
Introducing, Louie! Yes, I know, he is NOT an Airedale. Louie is actually a Kerry Blue Terrier although I think he's more like a Kerry Poo, meaning a Kerry and Poodle mix. He is a purebred but I say so in the loosest sense because he's bred very poorly. He is a petshop dog that no doubt is the end result of a puppymiller. Louie was purchased by someone who wanted him to be a "mascot dog" for his grooming salon. Although this in itself wasn't any tragedy, what was not right was the fact that this person apparently did not want Louie as a pet at all. So Louie spent the beginning of his life as a "product" in a petshop and then the subsequent year as an "advertisement" in a grooming salon. He was treated very well by the staff, but he was still a very misguided terrier with no solid hands to show him the way around his life. To make the long story short, he came to us because we came at the right time under the right circumstances. We weren't ready to get another Airedale whose face would remind us of Teddy but were very lonely without a dog, and so Louie seemed like a right match. People who were looking for home for him strongly wanted a terrier-experienced family, which we certainly are thanks to our 10-year-long Airedale-gone lifestyle. So Louie came to us on 11/3/06 as a "trial" and became an official member of the family one month later on 12/3/06. During this first month, a little hooligan with no manners turned into a little gentleman who is all goodness and sweetness. He is now houseborken and so no longer needs the "manner" belt. A big achievement, thank doG! He loves everyone, which includes feline kinds as well. What we really like about him is the fact that he loves being cuddled with. Perhaps this has something to do with the long-time neglect he suffered, but we mostly believe that he is naturally like this. Louie is remarkably forgiving and easy-going despite his hardships. He was never abused, mind you, but for a male terrier who didn't have strong guidance in his early life, he did not become a disaster at all. Really, after the long-time abuse we suffered from an Airedale (G), we find him way too easy. This is part of the reason why we call him a Kerry Poo. A terrier this easy cannot be a 100% terrier. LOL. Whatever it is, one thing for sure is that Louie is one happy boy! |
