Bear Necessities of LifeMusings of Teddy Bear Necessity's Household
to Whom It May Concern Cat Tired (not really dog tired, at least not our dog)

After a hard day's night.
Looking very familiar ... . Beach Weekend Again
2007.09.11 (Tue)
We went to the beach again.
This time, with a friend's black Lab "Ellie" in tow. Labs are natural swimmers. They are like seals. Louie doesn't willingly go into the water, so we got him on the boogie board. To be inclusive, not to be abusive, mind you. A surfer dog in making? Digging his nails into the board for his dear life, Louie was not going to let himself be thrown overboard. As a result he actually rode the board quite well. Retrievers do retrieving the best. After hours of play, Ellie decides it's time for everybody to come out of the water. Wet 'n wild dogs dancing on the beach. The water temperature is still high enough and there is no jelly fish out yet, so we should be able to have a few more beach days. Lover Boy

Teddy was the kind of a dog that could befriend anyone because she had learned proper social behaviors from early on. Louie is the kind of a dog that could befriend anyone because he is a friendly dog by nature despite his lack of socialization.
Since Louie was a greeting dog at a grooming salon for almost a year, he did get socialized to other beings on the surface. So he is very good at greeting and mingling with any dogs, and he doesn't object to sharing his space with anyone. But if he encounters a rough houser, say a young and rambunctious Airedale, he suddenly becomes less sure of himself. He looks extremely apprehensive about being roughed up, and he tends to do a lot of timid-growls and barks, which is really not that normal for him. (If I didn't know Airedales, I might have thought my boy was simply being abused. I think that Louie's unsureness stems from his upbringing. As an official greeter of a grooming salon, he was never allowed to do more than "greeting." He simply never got chances to play with other dogs because they were customers' dogs and the shop would have preferred to ensure no trouble would ensue. Hence he ended up not learning what properly socialized dogs learn in puppyhood. That is, how far they could go with each other without inviting hassles. Teddy was rather demure for an Airedale, so she was no real rough-houser, either, but she still enjoyed a healthy dose of being thrown around by other dogs. Afterall, that girl did spend 3-4 hours in dog parks everyday particularly when she was a puppy. Louie's upbringing made him become the kind of a dog that can't handle too much rough-and-tumble. Kerries are supposed to be tough dogs, but Louie was raised to be a lover, not a fighter, and that's exactly who he has become. "What can I say? I'm just a gentle boy." Waterside Terrier .. NOT!

Airedales were bred to hunt river otters in Yorkshire, England, so they are also known as Waterside Terriers. When you look into Kerry Blues, they were also used as vermin hunters including river otters in Ireland. So perhaps it's not too much of a stretch to think that Kerries, too, could be called Waterside Terriers. When it comes to Louie the Airedale-wanna-be, however, it certainly ain't the case.
"OK, Louie, come get this stick." "Hmmm, this is interesting." "Almost, almost! You can get it, Louie!" "Nope, too far. Fetch it for me, daddy?" This is as deep as this Waterside Terrier-wanna-be would go. Pitiful! |
