Farewell Party
With Russell's UK visa going through and his departure pending, we had a farewell get-together inviting a few of our dear friends.

Our beach-house neighbor's 6-year-old daughter drew our family as a gift.

It says "I ラブ Russell." How cute! OK, so there's Russell, Louie, Sakura, Tobey, Zoey, and even their Airedale, Lady ... but wait a minute, the human female figure isn't me because it says "Alisa." She drew herself instead of me! LOL

The party was hastily put together because the word of his departure came rather suddenly, but we were grateful that more than a handful of people were able to come.

it was also a good timing that Russell's cousin Karina was visiting from San Francisco at the time. Thanks Karina for all your hard work at being the life of the party! ;-)

Louie the Toy
Louie is a playable dog. I mean "he's such a stuffed animal, you can do anything to him" kind of playable.

What is being done to Louie here, I dunno. I found them in this position just sitting quietly.

Our neighbor's little girl adores Louie. She picks him up and dances with him all the time, to which Louie has no objection.

We think Louie looks even more like a stuffed animal when he stands up straight. We think he's sooo cute!

We tried the same with Sakura, but she just isn't as limber and so doesn't work very well.

Louie is also small enough (11 kg) that you can even lift him up like this!

BTW

Doesn't this remind you of

Sakura's Many Firsts
Sakura had many FIRSTS in her first week with us.

First, she learned how to "sit."

Show dogs learn to STAND, not to SIT, you see.

I personally had never met an adult dog **that** confused about doing the simple task of sitting before, but she got the idea in no time with the help of clicker training. That marked the end of her show career. Kinda sad.

She also learned "cats."

Maybe it was irresponsible of us, but I had the utmost confidence that Sakura would not pose any threat to our cats just by judging from her happy-go-lucky personality, and so no special measurement was taken to introduce them to each other.

The result? Sakura is interested in them, sure, (what dog wouldn't?), but her demeanor doesn't intimidate the cats at all. They haven't even hissed at her much, and Tobey the great dog-loving cat is even fine being smothered by her.

She also went into "the ocean" for the first time.

She went right into the water chasing the new Airedale friend, Lady. Although she doesn't swim just yet, she certainly does not mind getting her feet wet.

She also became "the bed dog" for the first time.

She had never been allowed to share the bed with two-leggeds, but we of course encourage our animals to sleep with us. It's quite nice to be able to touch warm soft fur when you roll over, you know.

She also had never been "picked up by a little girl" previously.

Our neighbor girl who is owned by the Airedale "Lady" loooooooves our Kerry Blues. That's because Louie and Sakura are more gentle and lighter than her bull-in-a-china-shop Lady who is quite understandably a bit much for a 6-year-old.

"Riding an elevator" and "putting on the raincoat" are also new things, both of which she has taken in stride.

She's even "done a restaurant" with us.

More fun things await us in our life together, I'm sure. :-)

Announcements
We have a new addition to our family.

"Hello, I'd like to introduce ...

myself. I'm Sakura. I'm 1.5 years old. Very nice to meet you."

No, you aren't seeing double. You are actually seeing two dogs.

Well, this was oh so unplanned.

We got a phone call late Sunday night on May 18 from a friend of ours who is a Kerry Blue's breeder. He's been helping me to groom Louie to become Kerry-like from his previous sorry Shunauzer-Poodle like existence.

On the phone he suddenly announced that he could no longer groom Louie as he's been doing once a month because he has a herniated intervertebral disk and his condition suddenly worsened to the point that he can't bend his body for a prolonged period of time even for a few minutes.

Not only that, he's decided to give up breeding altogether because he felt he's no longer physically capable of doing so all by himself. This is after being involved in the Kerry world for 23 years!

And not only that, he said he was thinking about letting go the two Kerries (boy and girl) he had if the homes he had in mind for each of them agreed to take them in. And yes, you guessed it, one of those homes was us.

Sakura (meaning "Cherry Blossoms") is a beautiful girl with wonderful temperament. She came from Sweden one year ago to lead the next generation of this breeder's breeding program. She's a true gem of good breeding; she has top-notch conformation and she is made-of-all-sugar-and-nice-things sweet. Honestly, she's the kind of a girl that we might never get to meet in our lifetime. How could we say "no"?

One of the biggest reasons why he chose us, so he said, was that he knew we wouldn't breed her. She was a chosen girl for his line, and many Japanese Kerry fanciers would love to get their hands on her. Surely Sakura would make great contributions to the enhancement of the Kerry gene pool in Japan, which sadly is really too small, but he was more afraid of her being exploited commercially. That is why he's decided to give her up totally as a pet. How could we turn our backs to his trust?

So Sakura came to become part of our family on May 21.

You can tell that she's already well-adjusted and happy, right?

So, we now have 4 official four-legged members in our family, and none of them is an Airedale. Funny what life brings you... .

Also, by the way, we are moving to London, too, by the end of this year.

Hence the title, plural "announcements."
