Bear Necessities of LifeMusings of Teddy Bear Necessity's Household
to Whom It May Concern Food for Thought

A pitbull tied outside a supermarket is watching something very intently. What is he looking at? A little cutie is the answer. (Despite their bad reputation, many Pitbulls are very nice dogs. Just ask Cesar Millan, the Dog Whisperer.) This is a scene we come across quite often in London. Many stores have hooks outside to tie dogs while owners shop and many dogs are tied like this waiting for their masters' return very patiently. The sight might seem endearing to many, but it is disconcerting to those of us who know the danger they are exposed to. Organizations such as Dog Theft Action and Pets Bureau report that over 500 dogs and cats go missing everyday in UK as the market for stolen pets is there and there is no shortage of unscrupulous lowlives who consider stealing pets as easy money. Many stolen pets are sold and resold for profit or used as baits in dog fighting. Many people don't believe this is true as thousands of pets are abandoned each year. RSPCA alone dealt with 3,372 abandoned pets in 2008. "Why would anyone get someone's pets when there are so many animals available?," some wry person might ask. The answer is that it is easier to steal someone's unguarded pets than going through some rescue organizations. Someone's treasured pets are easier to handle, too, which makes stealing a child's play. As CNN and other news sources have reported that the number of abandoned pets is rising in UK, by more than 67% in some parts of the country, as a direct result of the credit crunch, people might also think that the stolen pet market is shrinking. Unfortunately it also isn't the case. It might not be expanding, but the fact remains that tens of thousands of pets go missing every month only to be never seen by their heart-broken owners. The situation is very similar in US and many other parts of the world. We simply cannot let our pets out of our sight if we want them to be safe. Pets have no way to determine their fate; we do. Let's put away winter clothing.

With the arrival of British summer time, days are becoming longer and warmer. It's time to put away winter clothing.
Let's trim that overcoat off you, Sakura-chan! Sakura: "I cordially decline your offer, thank you very much." Louie: "Hey, she made me put away mine already!" "I said no thank you!" Well, who said that it was a request, Miss Bear-y? The tail is turning into that of a beaver after 2 1/2 months of no trimming. Sakura's coat is so thick and dense that this much growth makes it difficult even to comb or bathe. It's really time to chop it all off. Before After (4 hours later) Normally they get trimmed every month, so the job is easier and takes shorter time. The reason why I had neglected them for so long this time was because I had to wait for the equipments to arrive in our sea freight from Japan. I could've taken them to a local groomer, perhaps, but I would hate it if they came back as Schnauzer/Poodle-Wanna-Bes. Such a likely scenario... . Hey, who says that they look like that anyway? Hmpf! |
